“The beginning of the Jewish year, marked last month with the observance of Rosh Hashanah, is a season of holy days and celebrations. The solemnity of the High Holy Days gives way to the joy of the week-long festival of Sukkot. Immediately following this is Simchat Torah (literally, “rejoicing in the Torah”), which this year occurs tomorrow, when we will gather in our synagogues for a festive celebration of God’s Word given to Moses on Mount Sinai.
Every week in synagogue, Jews publicly read from the Torah beginning with the first chapter of Genesis, and continuing through the book of Deuteronomy. Tomorrow, the cycle will begin once again. Simchat Torah marks the completion of this annual cycle of Torah readings.”
